Neighborhood Targeting on Facebook: Reaching Customers in Osu, Labadi, Tema & Kumasi

Stop boosting to all of Ghana. A step-by-step guide to hyper-local Facebook targeting for Accra, Tema, and Kumasi neighborhoods — exact radius settings, interest stacks, and budget splits.

A boost that reaches "Ghana" feels impressive in the dashboard and useless at the till. If your customers must physically reach you — a restaurant, salon, boutique, or gym — the fastest way to cut wasted spend is to stop advertising to people who will never visit.

Neighborhood targeting pins your ads to the streets around your shop. Here is how we set it up for clients across Accra, Tema, and Kumasi.

The 7-step neighborhood setup

  1. Use Ads Manager, not the Boost button — boost treats location as an afterthought.
  2. Choose the Messages objective — it optimizes for WhatsApp conversations, not likes.
  3. Pin your shop and set a 3–5 km radius — under 2 km under-delivers; beyond 7 km you pay for people who won't travel.
  4. Choose age and gender to match who actually buys.
  5. Add two or three broad interests — narrow stacks strangle delivery in Ghana's smaller ad market.
  6. Set ₵30+/day for 14 days so Meta can exit the learning phase.
  7. Judge on day 3, reallocate on day 7 from the weakest area to the strongest.

Area playbooks

Different neighborhoods behave like different markets. Skews below come from our own campaign data:

AreaBest forAudience skew we see
Osu (Oxford Street)Fashion, nightlife, food18–34, Instagram-first, evenings
East LegonPremium retail & services25–45, Facebook + Instagram mix
La/LabadiBeauty, salons, services18–44 mixed, strong weekend activity
Tema Communities 1–25Family food & promos25–45, Facebook Feed, weekends
Spintex RoadRetail, auto services, gyms22–40 mixed, commute-hour spikes
Kumasi (Adum, KNUST)Student deals & retail18–28, Reels-heavy
Takoradi (Market Circle)Wholesale & retail traders25–50, Facebook Feed, mornings

Interest stacks that work here

  • Food: Restaurants + Street food + Food delivery apps.
  • Fashion: Online shopping + Fashion accessories + Boutiques.
  • Beauty: Cosmetics + Hairdressing + Skincare.
  • Events: Concerts + Nightlife + Weekend events.

Resist stacking ten interests "to be safe" — in a market of ~8 million Facebook users, narrow stacks strangle delivery and raise your CPM. Broad beats clever here.

The 60/30/10 budget split

When a business targets several areas, we allocate:

  • 60% to the core neighborhood (walk-in catchment).
  • 30% to adjacent high-potential areas.
  • 10% to a test area — this is how you discover your next best area before competitors do.

Mistakes that waste money

  • City-wide boosts — reach is vanity; conversations within delivery distance are the goal.
  • English-only creative in Twi-heavy areas — test one Twi hook variant per campaign.
  • Ignoring placement splits — Reels wins under-35s; Feed still wins for family food offers.
  • Judging too early — day-1 results lie. Give any area 72 hours before reallocating.

Neighborhood targeting is included in every plan we run. See how full campaigns work, or start with one boosted flyer pinned to your catchment.

Frequently asked questions

Should I target my whole city or just my area?

If customers must physically reach you, target a 3–5 km radius around your location first. Widen only after two weeks of data shows demand from farther out.

Do I need Twi creative outside Greater Accra?

English performs fine in central Accra, but adding a Twi hook line lifts engagement in Kumasi and market areas. Test one Twi variant per campaign before committing budget.

Does Instagram matter for local targeting?

Yes for under-35 audiences in Osu, East Legon, and Kumasi. Our portfolio sees Instagram Reels deliver the cheapest video views, while Facebook Feed still wins for 35+ food and family offers.

Why not just use the Boost button?

Boost optimizes for engagement, not conversations. It also defaults to broad locations. Ads Manager lets you pin neighborhoods, choose placements, and optimize for WhatsApp chats — the difference between decoration and sales.
